|
Gonzales is an 18 hole grassy, nicely wooded course in long, narrow, rectangular park. A short road bisects the park into East and
West halves, and serves as convenient parking. The front nine plays out-and-back (roughly clockwise) on the East half of the park, while the
back nine does the same on the West half (to get to the number 10 tee, cross the creek on the footbridge). The tree coverage is thick
enough to require shot-shaping on almost every hole, but thin enough that a mildly errant shot isn't punished too badly (there is almost no
"schule" on the course). The front nine is mostly flat, but there is some elevation change on #9 and much of the back nine.
The lowest lying part of the back nine doesn't drain very well, so be prepared for mud, lots of casual water, and thick mosquitoes if it has
been raining recently. All the holes have concrete teepads, but they are narrow enough that some players may find their run-up is a bit
cramped. I've heard that maps are available at the Chamber of Commerce (just down St. Lawrence St. from the park, on the town square),
but the holes are fairly easy to find without one. Except for the drainage problem mentioned above, the park is very pretty and well
maintained. It is also not at all crowded; I've been there several times on Friday afternoons and have never once seen another park user
(disc golfer or otherwise).
